The appearance of bromelia is indeed interesting. The roset shape of the leaves is like a red, purple, pink, and orange flower. But, such beauty is unable to pursue hobbyists to buy it since they are afraid that bromelia can be a mosquito breeding site due to its water sustaining character.
'As a matter of fact, mosquitoes cannot live in bromelia due to its acid water', argued Gunawan Widjaja in Bogor. It is proven by Moch Choirul Hidayat and Ludfi Santoso from the Faculty of Public Health Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, and Hadi Suwasono from the Research Station of Disease Vector of Department of Health the Republic of Indonesia (Stasiun Penelitian Vektor Penyakit Departemen Kesehatan RI), Salatiga. Their research result showed that they found more Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in water with neutral pH than in water with acid or alkali pH. When it was tested, the water acidity level of bromelia was 5,6.
